On Wednesday, October 23 the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District held two walking tours for members of the press. One tour focused on home decor/design and the other focused on fashion apparel/beauty establishments along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn located between Barclay’s and Brooklyn Bridge Park. I had the pleasure of being invited on the “fashion” walking tour. I have to say I was really excited to see why “many shoppers now come from other boroughs to check out the fashion and design trends that are converging here”, as noted by the AABID Executive Director Josef Szende.
Californian cult label, Banana Republic, is almost as well known for its innovative and highly successful collaborations as it is for its effortless, all American style. Last Summer saw Banana Republic join forces with fellow Californian, Trina Turk. This latest stylish collaboration, with New York based label Milly NY by Michelle Smith, could possibly be Banana Republic’s most lucrative to date. Continue Reading
So far I have been able to visit the exhibit and attend the screening for Versailles ’73 documentary in which he is highlighted. Unfortunately, I have to miss this very exciting event, but wanted to share it with you all just in case you are free and able to attend!
Solange Knowles may not be on a global takeover tour like her big sister, but she is definitely dominating on the local front, especially here in NYC. Even though she is a fairly new resident to Brooklyn, she epitomizes much of the eclectic and creative vibe that resides there. Not to be confused with the hipster subculture movement alive and well in BK, Solange has a special way of making the past new again.
She’s featured in Brooklyn Magazine showcasing her unique “throwback” style, as she discusses how she has embraced the past and how she’s discovering to live in the present.
Known to be a trend creator not follower, Solange continues to be an “it girl” with a great sensibility for mixing past and present in her style. It doesn’t hurt that she seems to be born of another time and glows with a beautiful old soul. Continue Reading
On May 9th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened its doors for its latest fashion exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture. Curated by the Met’s Andrew Bolton- with a helping hand from Givenchy’s own maestro of punk, Riccardo Tisci- the exhibition explores the intriguing journey of punk from its subcultural rebellious and anti-social roots to being an integrated part of our fashion industry.
Punk is also an integrated part of New York and London’s fashion heritage. While we Brits feel we have a deep affiliation with punk, after all it is a movement that was undeniably born in London’s King’s Road, the truth is that punk actually originated in New York with bands such as Richard Hell and the Voidoids and the Ramones. Malcolm McLaren, the man who taught Vivienne Westwood everything she knows about punk (well, almost), even credited his infamous look for The Sex Pistols to Richard Hell.
I absolutely LOVE New York City in the Summer! Yes, the temps can get unbearable at times, but there’s always so much to see and do that you just stop into a bodega for a cool drink and keep it moving!
I mentioned in yesterday’s post that last week’s Fashion Star challenge was all about warm weather looks. Well, this post is for one of the other winning looks that I really thought was a “must have” for your summer wardrobe.
