How Punk Went From Street Fashion to High Fashion

feature image

On May 9th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened its doors for its latest fashion exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture. Curated by the Met’s Andrew Bolton- with a helping hand from Givenchy’s own maestro of punk, Riccardo Tisci- the exhibition explores the intriguing journey of punk from its subcultural rebellious and anti-social roots to being an integrated part of our fashion industry.

Punk is also an integrated part of New York and London’s fashion heritage. While we Brits feel we have a deep affiliation with punk, after all it is a movement that was undeniably born in London’s King’s Road, the truth is that punk actually originated in New York with bands such as Richard Hell and the Voidoids and the Ramones. Malcolm McLaren, the man who taught Vivienne Westwood everything she knows about punk (well, almost), even credited his infamous look for The Sex Pistols to Richard Hell.

Bracher Emden : A pleasant discovery!

BEmain feature

I came to London with a dream to live by the iconic Thames River and work for a fashion PR Company. Today, the accessories brand Bracher Emden, has put me a few steps closer to making that all a reality. I’m now working in fashion PR while I search for a beautiful apartment by the Thames!

I was doing a work experience role with a media agency and at the same time rigorously applying for other permanent role, when I came across a tweet about Bracher Emden looking to assist their press and publicity Continue Reading

Introducing….. House of Shoena

Feature image House of Shoena
Like many ladies I so do not make use of all the items I own in both my wardrobes, case in point; a few weeks ago I ‘discovered’ a real beauty- a Dark green, velvet blazer from Topshop that was squashed on a hanger at the back my wardrobe. I grabbed the blazer immediately (feeling very delighted) and tried it on, I then reached into one of the pockets and made yet another discovery, now what I’m about to tell you is quite embarrassing as inside one of the pockets was a train ticket from 2005- the last time that I had worn this blazer. This made me want to go through my entire wardrobe and that’s exactly what I did. Believe me when I tell you I came across many great ‘forgotten’ items.

The green velvet blazer

Sitting on the train on my way to work, flicking through my magazines and of course  wearing my ‘new’ blazer I began to think of ways to pass on some of my unwanted items, I mean of course as always I would donate lots to charity but I wanted a additional and creative option. Simply because due to the years of previously working in fashion buying coupled with my addiction to vintage and all things fashion oh and that I’m a hoarder!! I have collated way too much stuff and I mean way too much!!

Then just like that something clicked; why don’t I start an on line shop? My sisters are always teasing me that my room is ‘like shopping in topshop’ and I definitely have the product. The concept would be a sort of eBay meets vintage boutique and it would consist of all products I have loved at some point and still do love but that now need to go to a new home.

I would need a name that sits nicely alongside my fashion blog, ‘Just call me Shoena’ and I would need a fab business partner who I trust and admire to help me run the store. So that’s what I did.

Please allow me to introduce my online store ‘House of Shoena’ (H.O.S).

The Revised concept

My online ’boutique’ will still stock pre-owned products, including one off samples, and a little bit of Vintage. But it will also showcase excellent emerging talent.

My Business partner

My very good friend Erika who is a Sales manager for Erickson Bemon will help me run the store.

HOS will launch in 2 weeks time on http://boutique.dznrshowcase.com/

Statement Trousers!

feature image

I thought of writing about this trend a couple of times, but wasn’t sure if it was a wearable trend. However, after I arrived in London last week and I spotted more than just a couple of women donning the trend (and rocking it if I may say so), up and down the streets of central London.

Statement trousers are one of the newly born trends that I find so inspiring, as it breaks all boundaries of imagination and creativity. They make going little crazy feel so normal. There are printed trousers, harem pants Continue Reading

Hats ON!!!

Royal Ascot 2012 Day 3
Hats are one of my favorite accessories. They have fascinated me since I was a little kid and clearly the obsession has not seemed to fade away. With beach season on our heads, I couldn’t think of a better time to talk about this. There are a number of different kinds of hats for different occasions; and then there are fascinators, which is another league of decorative headpiece, like a smaller hat that is pinned to the head or attached to a comb or a headband.

What attracts me towards hats is, that apart from serving the main purpose of acting like a protective shield against heat, dust and sunlight, it is a brilliant cover up for a bad hair day and how. It totally changes the look and adds charisma to the attire be it a casual day at the beach or a night out.

Introduced in the 1800s, Fedoras came as a boon (ideal item) to fashionable women and it wasn’t long before men stole this great accessory; but as we have seen in the fashion history with gender-bending/androgyny being Continue Reading

Men’s Fashion Week Debuts in London!

featureimage-london fashion week
Women’s fashion, has been written about, spoken and showcased since centuries. There are fashion weeks all over the globe dedicated to women’s fashion. But how many of us recollect talking about the men’s fashion. Faintly. It is definitely one of those areas of fashion that is slowly but steadily picking up. One of the biggest evidence of the growing popularity and fashion sense amongst men is the newly introduced full-fledged 3-day Men’s Fashion Week in London.

Men’s fashion week was prevalent in Milan and Paris, and finally this year Britain decided it was time to showcase the British men’s fashion full throttle. So far, London fashion week used to be a 3 day affair for the women’s fashion and the last day was crammed with men’s fashion; that left very little time and a tiny space for the men. A lot of British talent, when it came to men’s designers, were seen moving out of the country considering the tiny scope of growth. Hence, keeping the increasing awareness of fashion amongst men, and giving and an expanded time and space to the men’s designers. The 1st men’s London fashion week was announced to be taking place soon after the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and in time before the Olympics 2012.

The fashion week finally commenced on the 15th of June till the 17th of June and was launched by none other Continue Reading

Get The Look: Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah feature image
Tinie Tempah is a British rapper, MC and CEO of Disturbing London Records. His first single “Pass Out”, debuted at number 1 on the UK singles chart In March 2010. I remember when I first heard this song, it was early 2010 and I was at a work event, the DJ introduced this song as ‘a song that was going to be big this year’ and boy was the DJ right!  From that day and onwards everywhere I went I heard this song being played. Each and every time “Pass Out” was played in a bar everyone  would go crazy! The infectious beat and the catchy, yet somewhat wacky lyrics, this song blew up in 2010 and made the world sit up and take note of the oh –so-stylish and very cute  rapper Tinie Tempah (real name Patrick Junior C. Okogwu).

Since then, Tinie has gone on to release other successful hits such as “Written in the stars” and “Frisky” and he has Continue Reading
