On Wednesday, October 23 the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District held two walking tours for members of the press. One tour focused on home decor/design and the other focused on fashion apparel/beauty establishments along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn located between Barclay’s and Brooklyn Bridge Park. I had the pleasure of being invited on the “fashion” walking tour. I have to say I was really excited to see why “many shoppers now come from other boroughs to check out the fashion and design trends that are converging here”, as noted by the AABID Executive Director Josef Szende.
If you have been reading the blog for awhile you may remember my interview with Nnene Janice Essien, who is the founder of OBA Designs by NJE. Her line features everyday pieces in African wax print which are made in Nigeria, and will be showcased this weekend at the 11th Annual FestAfrica!
Last Tuesday, I attended the Première Vision NY and Indigo NY (textile and print design shows), for Fall-Winter 14/15. I This was the first time the two shows have been combined into one big event. I had a great time checking out the predicted print and textile trends for next year.
Right before I left the shows, I noticed a “featured display” corner of fashion and photography work that was so unique and creative. It ended up belonging to the winning designer of this year’s Hyères International Festival of Fashion & Photography competition, which partners with Première Vision. The designer was Satu Maaranen, who hails all the way from Helsinki! I was glad chat with her a little about her design aesthetics and the competition.
What would summer be without the ability to show some skin and go even further and decorate that skin on show with some fabulous accessories! Beach ready doesn’t need to mean sans jewelry either. Summer is a time when we can flaunt our natural colors and enhance our glow with complimentary colors, wherever the summer takes us.
I absolutely love mirroring the natural hues of the season in the jewelry that I wear. Think Tequila sunrises & the Caribbean like this floral bangle from Antik Batik! When wearing busy florals, be sure to choose an outfit that has solid colors and let the bangle be the focal point of pattern & color.
If you have been reading this blog for awhile you will remember the interview we did with Vicky Nicholls of Twisted Angle. She has created a membership based website portal for all things “knitty fashion” for the independent knitter or professional designer. Vicky recently launched a new website – Trend Prediction, which offers a platform to learn the professional way to predict colors and themes for all seasons. I have to say, it’s pretty cool and innovative.

About a month ago I saw a really nice illustration of Malia Obama on my FB feed, and it had a “fashion-y” approach to it that immediately caught my eye. I was very intrigued because I loooove all types of illustrations, especially fashion illustrations. I then followed the links back to the artist of this work and immediately became a fan! It was so refreshing to see a young illustrator focusing on creating beautiful images that highlight and celebrate Black Women.
After I perused through her website/bio/external links… I learned that Veronica is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Fashion Design, at the same school that I attended for my degree! More than being just an artist and student, I realized she is wearing many hats and wears them very well! Continue Reading
It was a highly anticipated performance which her Stans and Pepsi had a done a great job at promoting. Beyonce, lived up to the hype and lit up the stage (literally)! Of course her performance (and Destiny’s Child Reunion) were the highlights of her halftime showcase, but it was her outfit that caught the most attention throughout social media…
