On May 9th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened its doors for its latest fashion exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture. Curated by the Met’s Andrew Bolton- with a helping hand from Givenchy’s own maestro of punk, Riccardo Tisci- the exhibition explores the intriguing journey of punk from its subcultural rebellious and anti-social roots to being an integrated part of our fashion industry.
Punk is also an integrated part of New York and London’s fashion heritage. While we Brits feel we have a deep affiliation with punk, after all it is a movement that was undeniably born in London’s King’s Road, the truth is that punk actually originated in New York with bands such as Richard Hell and the Voidoids and the Ramones. Malcolm McLaren, the man who taught Vivienne Westwood everything she knows about punk (well, almost), even credited his infamous look for The Sex Pistols to Richard Hell.
