My really good friends would tell you that music is my life…
I appreciate the fact that music can: Express your mood at a given time, Bring people of various backgrounds together for a positive cause, Make you value our rights of self expression, and Spark memories of the past. My appreciation of fashion falls under the same ideals. It doesn’t surprise me that the two industries live within similar creative spaces.
Back when MTV lived up to it’s name, the birth of music videos brought this creative space of fashion and music to the masses in one medium. Since then we’ve seen both musician and their stylists use the music video concept as a platform to showcase unique style. Possibly hoping to get fans to emulate the styling of the artist they adore.
Now here we are today, with musicians and designers taking the “fashion music video” concept a step further. The result is “The new generation of Fashion and Music promotion“, by use of direct advertising for both creators of music and fashion alike. In my opinion, I feel like Old Navy got this ball rolling with their Spring/Summer 2011 campaigns by Old Navy Records. Recently some fashion designers joined in on the fun. John Varvatos had The Roots present his Fall 2011 Campaign video (Tuesday’s blog post). Alexander Wang has musicians Santigold and Spankrock presenting his T by Alexander Wang Fall 2011 Campaign. Last but not least, Prabal Gurung has new songstress Rye Rye presenting his Resort 2012 Campaign.
So, what are your thoughts on this new dose of Fashion and Music collaborations?
